Description

Need a creative outlet and want to learn to become a better painter? Acrylic painting is the perfect solution! Join Pratibha as she shows you how to handle this water-based medium to create satisfying and creative artwork. Each week a new subject will be explored including landscape, floral, still life, or seascape. Basic techniques to be covered will include paint properties, how to mix color, tinting and shading, brush techniques, and composition. Also learn how to adapt your own photo and concept onto canvas. 

Materials to purchase by student:  9x12" or 11x14” back stapled canvas or canvas panel (around 6 total); palette pad; metal palette knife; acrylic brushes variety set, such as: #8 filbert, 1/2" flat, #2 or #3 round; water container; paper towels; small spray bottle; smock or apron (optional). Acrylic paints in tubes (or a variety pack): Titanium white, Cadmium red light, Ultramarine blue, Cadmium Yellow medium, Thalo blue, Alizarin Crimson, Hookers Green, Burnt Umber, Burnt Sienna, Raw Umber, Grumbacher Red or other similar cool red, payne's gray.

Covid Protocols: At this time, mask wearing is optional. If COVID cases increase at any point and we are recommended by local health organizations, we may return to mandatory mask wearing. Classes and workshops held in all spaces at the art center utilize an HVAC system supplemented with portable HEPA filtration systems. Fresh air is introduced whenever possible. Classes are spaced appropriately to allow 3 - 6 ft. of social distancing. All our staff and Teaching Artists have been vaccinated. High-touch surfaces are wiped down regularly using certified cleaning agents. Hand sanitizer is available in all classrooms. 

About the Teaching Artist

Pratibha Raju is an artist and a visual art teacher. Pratibha earned her Bachelors of Fine Arts specializing in Drawing and Painting in 1998 from India. Since then she has been practicing and teaching drawing and painting in different styles and mediums. She has exhibited her paintings in oil and acrylic at the College Annual Art Shows and at the Coram Long Island and Piscataway libraries. Her watercolor landscape paintings were selected for the Plainsboro Preserve juried art shows for the last two years. Pratibha has completed many art and teaching courses online from the British Council and Coursera.
