Saturday: Making Comics: Concept to Panel (Ages 8-11)

Create your own comic short story! Making Comics invites both new and returning students to unleash their creativity, develop their artistic voice, and challenge their drawing skills in a fun, workshop-style class. Students will explore the process of creating comics from start to finish through lessons on basic drawing techniques, character design, storytelling, comic panel layouts, visual pacing, and page composition. They will also participate in creative games and activities designed to strengthen their drawing, problem-solving, and storytelling skills.

Throughout the class, students will develop their own original comic concept by creating memorable characters, designing unique worlds, and learning how images and words work together to tell an engaging story. By the end of this class, students will bring their comic ideas to life by creating a hero and villain, designing the world their story takes place in, and illustrating two or more comic pages that showcase their characters in action. The final project will serve as a story pitch and a starting point for students to continue expanding their comic universe beyond the workshop.

Students will work with a variety of studio art materials, including pencils, paper, erasers, inking pens, colored pencils, and more, as they develop their characters, illustrations, and comic pages.

A one-time materials fee of $40 is due on the first day of class.
