Artist Statement: Reflections- D & R Canal – Fall, 2020. I painted this in an en plein air class taught by Charles Viera. I enjoyed working outdoors in the fall and wanted to reflect the colors of the foliage and the blue of the water—a clarity in the air after summer’s heat. There was something very peaceful about working on this piece and happiness in being able to paint with other people again. I get a sense of solitude when I look at it now, which is somewhat misleading as there were lots of people hiking and biking on the trail.. but I was in my own little world. Red wall made it seem like this might be a secret garden, where one could find privacy.

Bio: Margaret Kalvar-Bushnell, b. 1957,  studied Art History at Wellesley College while majoring in Economics.  She studied water color painting at the State University of New York at Purchase during the summer of 1976.  She pursued a career in finance after graduation, while continuing to draw and paint.  During the 1990s, while raising her children, she studied with Michael Madigan and Hannah Fink at Artworks in Trenton.  She had works accepted at the Ellarslie Open in 1994, at TAWA at Ellarslie 1995, and at TAWA's Warehouse exhibit in 1995.  In May of 1996, she had a solo show at the Plainsboro Public Library, entitled Abstraction in Action, and participated in a group show at the Twin Rivers Library in 1997.  She resumed painting studies in 2017 with Charles Viera at Princeton Arts Council and in the following years has had works accepted in many West Windsor Arts Council juried shows, including their current exhibition, and student shows at the Princeton Arts Council, including the Master Class show in 2021.   In 2020 and 2021, her pastel submissions to the Mercer County Senior Art Show won first prize and Honorable Mention in their category.   In addition, she has had works on paper accepted into both the 2020 and 2021 juried shows at Phillips Mill. She continues to explore color, composition, and varying levels of abstraction in the media of oil painting and pastel.
