Artist Statement: Felting is a unique textile made totally by hands using very simple tools - water, soap and "massaging".
Some of Nelly's works are made of organic fibers, and are all hypoallergenic. She sometimes uses recycled, upcycled, & repurposed materials and uses eco-friendly non-toxic colors or natural ingredients. She practices clean disposal of waste material from the felting process. As far as using traditional materials and techniques in her heritage craft, Nelly says “My goal is to educate and popularize the making of one of the oldest forms of textile - felt, and apply the old traditions in contemporary art forms.”
Bio: "Nelly Kouzmina is a Fiber Artist working with natural fibers and dyes creating a variety of pieces from wall art to wearable, exploring broad possibilities of felt making. Her work is original, one of a kind, and inspired by nature and imagination. She started working with fibers in 2012, and developed her own style and techniques as well as unique surface design effects. Nelly participates in various juried art shows in New York City, New Jersey, Pennsylvania. Her work was selected for the show “Fashion. Fabric. Fibers”, New Hope Arts Council, 2016, 2017, 2018, and Fashion Show at National Textile Show in Oaks, PA, in 2016. Her unique accessories sold in Trenton State Museum store, Trenton City Museum Boutique, as well as private galleries. She participates in pop-up galleries supporting Home Front and Trenton Soup kitchen in Princeton, NJ. Nelly had her solo exhibits in Plainsboro library, NJ in 2015 and 2017. She is a member of International Association of Feltmakers IFA based in U.K., Member of Northeast Guild of Feltmakers, U.S., Member of Surface Design Association, U.S., Member of West Windsor Arts Council, NJ and Artists of Yardley, PA. Nelly got numerous awards as the Best in Fiber Art - Trenton City Museum at El laslie Open XXXI, May, 2014, and selected for museum exhibit in 2015, 2016. She received 1st Place/ Fine Arts & Crafts - Highland Park Art Show, NJ, 2014, Best in Show, 1st Place - New Hope Arts & Crafts Festival, 2014, 1st place in 2016. Nelly taught and continues teaching classes and workshops in Plainsboro Township, Artists of Yardley (AOY), PA, West Windsor Arts Center, Trenton City Museum, ArtWorks Trenton, Ground for Sculpture, Lawrenceville, NJ and private studio in Hopewell, NJ.
