Artist Statement: Painting is base on the Korean lunar calendar, with this year being the water rabbit. The rabbit is painted black because the color black is assocaited with element of water. The painting is done in the Korean traditional folk art style of Min-Hwa. The Min-Hwa technique uses special Korean ink, Korean pigment paint and handmade paper (Hanji) treated with Ah Guo (a medium from rabbit skin fiber). This medium allows ink to be layered on the paper. The Water Black Rabbit is the symbol of longevity, peace and prosperity in Asian culture, thus 2023 is predicted to be a year of hope.
