Turn! Turn! Turn! by Donna M. Kaye
Medium: watercolor
16.5 x 20 inches
Artist Statement: My watercolor painting of the very accomplished Paul Prestopino, who still dresses as he did in the '60s, captures him playing the folk tunes of his generation with the Roosevelt String Band at a concert I attended at Morven Museum in 2020 just before the pandemic. The themes that inspired protest and activist songs of the 60's and 70's still sharply resonate today and will certainly ring true for our future generations, even as the specific situations evolve and change. For example, think to the hopeful closing words of "Turn! Turn! Turn!"(1962) -- "a time for peace, I swear it's not too late."
Bio: Painting and drawing have afforded me great pleasure in retirement. I most enjoy painting dramatic landscapes and skies, and faces full of story. Some of my work is a bit whimsical. I am primarily a watercolorist, and was honored to win the First Place for watercolor, non professional category, for “Soup’s On” in the Mercer County Senior Art Show 2022. My paintings of apple trees have hung in Ellarslie Mansion and Terhune's Orchard, and I have exhibited my work at the Gourgaud Gallery in Cranbury and in the Plainsboro Library. It makes me happy to know that a number of my paintings hang in the homes of family members and friends.
