Time Continuum by Helene Plank
Medium: mixed media: buttons and beads hand-sewn onto canvas
14 x 18 inches
Artist Statement: This button/bead mosaic illustrates the cycle of life as represented by the color wheel. As events, memories and emotions combine to form a body of experience, each colorful component represents a bit of information contributing to the collective whole. Multiple themes run throughout this concept. First, the spiritual theme illustrates the progression through the current life, which ends and is seamlessly followed by the afterlife. Second, the metaphysical aspect depicts the current life as it moves onto successive lives. And third, a more basic view of the life cycle focuses on the person’s life experiences which are shared as memories and lessons to be passed on to future generations. Through all these scenarios, the concept of the present time is illustrated by the constant “sprinkling” of those occurrences and emotions which emerge as “pieces of time” shown as separate particles destined to take their place in this “time continuum.”
