Old Barney by William Plank
acrylic, 24 x 30 inches
Artist Statement: Located on the northern tip of Long Beach Island in Ocean County, Barnegat Lighthouse was designed by General George Meade and commissioned on January 1, 1859. It is 169 feet tall and the second tallest lighthouse in New Jersey. Closed in March of 2022 for renovations, the lighthouse is now open for visitors to climb the 217 steps to the top. Throughout history, Barnegat Lighthouse has been a symbolic image of hope and admiration. The sight has been so familiar to residents and visitors to New Jersey, that it is affectionately known as “Old Barney.”
Jersey Inspiration: I was greeted by Old Barney on many trips to the Jersey Shore.
