Artist Statement: Hunterdon County is home to many small locally-known businesses. In the midst of farmland in rural Holland Township is Jimmy’s, an old-fashioned ice cream stand and grill which still serves up generous servings of food and frozen treats. A visit to this local gem is an escape in time and a reminder to celebrate the joys of rural Hunterdon County. The inspiration for this pastel painting was to capture the old business sign in conjunction with the surrounding farm as the approaching rain storm threatens in the distance. The evening the reference photo was taken was not the first time rain approached an outdoor ice cream stand but even as the clouds rolled dangerously closer, not a single person left the line, a true testament to this local treasure!
Jersey Inspiration: The inspiration for this pastel painting on paper was to share the relaxed simple joys a slice of rural NJ life has to offer, if you are lucky enough to know where they are!
Bio: As a career graphic designer, Donna Ruane Rogers was looking for a creative outlet when she decided to try her hand at pastel painting several years ago. Now that she is retired from the corporate world, Ruane Rogers has been actively painting many of her favorite places in her home studio as well as en plein air around her home in Frenchtown, Hunterdon County as well as favorite locations in south Jersey and at the Jersey shore. She strives to accurately capture her subjects and their relationship with the light of the day. Her work has been displayed at The Hunterdon Art Museum in Clinton, NJ, the Riverfront Renaissance Center for the Arts in Millville, NJ, Ocean City Arts Center, Prallsville Mill in Stockton, NJ and at the Hopewell Valley Winery in Hopewell Valley, NJ. Ruane Rogers is an Associate Member of the Pastel Society of America.
