Ducks by the Lake by Margaret Kalvar-Bushnell
oil on canvas
12 x 12 inches
Artist Statement: I was inspired by a photograph because of both the composition and the colors, especially the greens and grays of the water, trees and bridge, and the contrast provided by the ducks in the foreground
Bio: Margaret Kalvar-Bushnell, b. 1957, studied Art History at Wellesley College while majoring in Economics. She studied water color painting at the State University of New York at Purchase during the summer of 1976. She pursued a career in finance after graduation, while continuing to draw and paint. During the 1990s, while raising her children, she studied with Michael Madigan and Hannah Fink at Artworks in Trenton and had works accepted at the Ellarslie Open in 1994, at TAWA at Ellarslie 1995, and at TAWA's Warehouse exhibit in 1995. In May of 1996, she had a solo show at the Plainsboro Public Library, entitled Abstraction in Action, and participated in a group show at the Twin Rivers Library in 1997. She resumed painting studies in 2017 with Charles Viera at Princeton Arts Council and in the following years has had works accepted in many West Windsor Arts Council juried shows, including their most recent exhibition, and student shows at the Princeton Arts Council, including the Master Class show in 2021. In 2020 and 2022 her pastel submissions to the Mercer County Senior Art Show won first prize in their category. In addition, she has had works on paper accepted into the 2020, 2021 and 2022 juried shows at Phillips Mill and had 3 works accepted into the 2022 Ellarslie Open. In September she had a solo show of 30 works at the Present Day Club in Princeton and has been featured in a joint show at Merwick via West Windsor Arts Council. She has two pastel portfolio pieces currently on sale at the Ellarslie Open. She continues to explore color, composition, and varying levels of abstraction in the media of oil painting and pastel.
