Tulips by Franne Demetrician
watercolor
3 x 4.5 inches
Artist Statement: I was inspired to paint this by a trip to a tulip farm in the Spring of 2023. Someone took a photo of the bunch of tulips I had gathered and I loved the colors and the perspective. I had copies made of this piece to create Mother's Day cards for the women in my family.
Bio: Born in Japan in 1949 Franne has been studying art since childhood, attended The Fashion Institute of Technology and later, after a stint as a wife and mother, returned to her education at Trenton State College majoring in art and minoring in art history.
Art has been an integral aspect of her life through various mediums including oils, acrylics, pastels, watercolors, drawing, photography, jewelry making, sewing, cooking and almost everything she does. Franne believes that everyone is an artist, and that creativity is the basis of human experience.
She has studied art privately for many years and as a young senior citizen has been in deep study and practice ongoing.
In 2003 Franne was ordained as an interfaith minister and together with her husband founded Common Ground Interfaith Community which has been meeting monthly since 2004. For 13 years Franne served One Spirit Interfaith Seminary in New York City as a dean of first-year students and has been a mentor since 2004.
From 2017 – 2019 Franne was Associate Editor and Creative Coordinator of Sacred Stories Media’s Owl Magazine, an online publication. She has an ongoing column in that publication called “Artist in Residence”.
Franne is comfortable sharing her years of acquired knowledge. She has authored and teaches three courses: Art from the Heart, What’s on Your Palette? - Basic Color Theory for Aspiring Artists, and Acrylic Basics. She enjoys teaching beginners about the various mediums, how to begin dabbling in artmaking, how to make art a way to “play” and interact with the inner child, and how to truly look and see. Through her teaching she aims to cultivate curiosity, inner exploration, and connection to curiosity. In addition to being informative and instructive, Franne’s courses are experiential, and inspiring. She has taught at OLLI-RU (Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at Rutgers University), Perkins Center for Art, Sacred U (a subsidiary of Sacred Stories Publishing) and privately from her home studio. She also hosts an ongoing acrylic painting studio via Zoom.
Franne has shown her work in several galleries in New Jersey, Pennsylvania and in virtual galleries and has earned first prize for pastels and first prize in show in the Somerset County Senior Art Show as well as First Prize for acrylics in the NJ State Senior Art Show. She works in her home studio in Somerset, NJ. Her work was recently seen at El Barrio Art Space in New York City as part of CAFed Artist Collective’s Phenomenal Women exhibition and had a one-woman exhibition in 2022 at Gonzo Glass in Mount Holly, NJ. She participated in “Viral Collaboration” as part of an online exhibition by Artist Voice and Vision. She is now exhibiting her work at the Straube Center in Pennington, NJ.
