Artist Statement: Throughout history, there have been instances in which documents require stamps or seals to mark them as “official”. Although small, these symbols of authority are mini works of art that carry substantial power. My fascination with their texture, detail and significance has led me to incorporate and simulate them in my mark-making. I am amused that one can convey the gravitas of an important government seal by using a discarded plastic bottle lid or other household item. Juxtaposing this whimsical approach with the formal items I have collected since childhood provides an opportunity to expose the dichotomies in myself and society.
Bio: Joann Donatiello has been making creative products for as long as she can remember. She works intuitively with a social scientist’s lens. She has studied pottery and art in Italy, France, and the U.S., most recently at the West Windsor Arts Center (WWAC).
