Artist Statement: Drawing is a spiritual act. In the process of making marks on paper, images reveal themselves. With Sgraffito, a subtractive technique of scraping through darker layers of color to reveal contrasting colors beneath, drawings take on a quality similar to cutting into a clay slab. Inherent in this process for me, there’s a childlike sense of play and wonder as unexpected colors emerge and come to light. The physicality of Sgraffito has a sculptural quality which allows building layers of color. Through the layering process of these drawings, think of them as sculptural objects.
Bio: As a youngster, I was encouraged to pursue art with painting, drawing, and sculpture.
I vividly remember trips with my family to museums and galleries, looking at art and sculpture while always carrying a sketchbook. After graduating from the University of the Arts in Philadelphia and then Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, I pursued life as an artist for many years. After a cross-country road trip through the desert Southwest, I felt a deep connection to the land and the big sky of New Mexico and decided to move to Albuquerque. It was in New Mexico that I discovered the miraculous power of acupuncture and decided to become an acupuncturist. As an artist and acupuncturist, energy medicine continues to blend my fascination with the interaction of art, science, creativity, and healing.
