Description

Call by Audrey Jakab & Alejandro Berlin
plastic whistles, mulberry paper
6 x 6 inches
Artist Statement: Like when cells multiply, we combine figurative plastic toys to make a new, single piece. The scattered become whole in the form of a stable, circular, abstract pattern suggesting the natural world. Covered with paper, individual details are obscured and their edges softened creating a sense of the passage of time through wear. The paper casing also invokes a unifying element that mimics the process of healing. Floating fibers in the mulberry paper make uneven patterns in contrast to the piece’s over-all symmetry and allude to the nerves and arteries of a live being. The manner in which we use repetition, pattern, shape and texture are part of how we leave our mark in this piece.

Call
This whimsical, hexagonal piece is made up of water whistles, the kind that warbles when partially filled with water. These objects eco the whistle languages used traditionally for communication in certain parts of the world. The sculpture’s bright color and the alert-bird postures capture a sense of delight with a brightness that is as appealing and hopeful as the advent of spring.
