Sewing Tsunami by Helene Plank

Artist Statement: Inspired by the spiral designs seen in fractal art pieces, “Sewing Tsunami” is my interpretation of an ocean wave of vibrant color with a variety of textures. Just as my past mosaics have been created, this piece is entirely hand sewn using recycled materials I have obtained through donations as well as through purchasing through yard sales and thrift shops. I have made my mark using this medium for the past 12 years. My mosaics are inspired by the works of Post-Impressionist Georges Seurat, whose style of “visual blending” allows the viewer to see the entire image comprised of many dots of colors.
Bio: Helene Plank has produced and exhibited her artwork at Grounds for Sculpture, Phillips’ Mill, The Gallery at Mercer County Community College, West Windsor Arts Council, The College of New Jersey, the Art and Healing Gallery at Capital Health – Hopewell, the Lawrence Branch of the Mercer County Library, and the New Jersey State Button Society. She has received several awards for her mixed media button mosaics. Her artwork is a part of the Mercer County Cultural and Heritage Commission permanent art collection, as well as in several private art collections.
