Mujer con moño by Susana Plotquin

free form crochet using cotton yarn, foam, tree branches

13 x 35 x 6 inches

Artist Statement: In honor of the late Fernando Botero, I’ve created a crochet portrait inspired by his “Mujer con moño.” Using freeform crochet, I’ve hopefully captured the essence of Botero’s voluminous figures. Botero said, “I have never painted a fat person in my life. I have expressed volume, I have sought to give prominence to volume, to make it more plastic, more monumental, almost like food, edible art. Art should be sensual in that sense.” Nevertheless, and by embracing the curves and textures in my crochet rendition, I invite viewers to appreciate the richness found in various body forms.

Bio: Throughout my artistic journey, I have consistently sought to explore the rich tapestry of cultures as expressed through the medium of crochet portraits. My fascination with the art of weaving ignited during a transformative visit to Guatemala, where I had the privilege of witnessing local women skillfully crafting intricate textiles. It was here that I first delved into the intricate weaving process, guided by the teachings of a talented local woman. This encounter sparked a profound connection with the art form, and I embarked on my own weaving adventures.

While weaving became a cherished part of my artistic repertoire, my creative voyage took an unexpected turn when I discovered the captivating world of freeform crochet. The sheer versatility and expressive potential of this craft left me awestruck, compelling me to incorporate it into my artistic practice.

A pivotal moment in this journey emerged as I began crafting intricate portraits using solely the medium of freeform crochet. My creative process takes on various forms; sometimes, I draw inspiration from a specific image, meticulously following the contours of eyes, mouth, nose, and other facial features. Conversely, abstract portrait sculptures manifest when I embark on a project without a preconceived notion of the final outcome, allowing the process to evolve organically, guided by the unique interplay of textures, colors, and stitches. This dynamic exploration of freeform crochet in portraiture allows me to capture the essence of my subjects with an extraordinary blend of meticulous precision and boundless creativity.
