Artist Statement: Leaving Your Mark to me these days involves documenting places or objects I find beauty in by photographing them and then using them as subjects for my paintings. My style, or "mark" if you will, is not always the same. The end result can range anywhere from impressionistic to abstract and almost anything in between. My goal is to convey my interpretation or personal reaction to what I see around me. This painting is based on a photo taken by me in summer 2023. We had a majestic double-trunk pin oak tree in our backyard that succumbed to a tree disease several years ago. We decided not to remove the bottom 2 feet of the trunk, as a remembrance. Last summer, the climate conditions were such that several varieties of mosses and fungi sprouted from top to bottom, decorating the entire tree stump. My rendition bears little resemblance to the photo, but I hoped to capture the delight I felt at seeing this tree remnant come back to life, so to speak.
