Artist Statement: As a representative landscape painter, my attention is often drawn to the movement of light, where the light hits and misses. In my work, sunlight is a motif that indicates the passage of time and the transient nature of beauty and life. In Morning Creeping, timelessness and time passing is represented by the transitional time of day, a scene part in shadow being overtaken by sunrise.
Bio: Jane Gavaghen is an oil painter based in Freehold, New Jersey. She works primarily in oils. Her loosely impressionistic landscapes have a tranquil quality and focus on local scenes. She employs indirect painting techniques, building up layers and glazes to give depth to her works. Jane’s work seeks to evoke familiarity, belonging and nostalgia.
Jane regularly shows her work at Freehold Art Gallery, the Guild of Creative Art where she is an exhibiting member, the Art Alliance of Monmouth County, the Belmar Arts Council and the Gallery at Thompson Park. Jane is also a board member of the Freehold Art Society.
Jane’s work has been accepted into juried shows at Monmouth Museum (2023, 2024), the Guild of Creative Art (2019, 2022), The Art Alliance of Monmouth County (2021) and the Belmar Arts Council (2022, 2023) where she was awarded third place. Monmouth Country has purchased one of her pieces for their permanent collection.
