Love and Protect by Debbie Gibbs
mixed media: paper and acrylic on stretched canvas
20 x 20 inches
Statement: The responsibility to love and protect belongs to all of us. This painting is a symbol and a reminder of the need to love and protect ourselves, our families, our friends, the environment, our community, our country, and those struggling around the world.
Bio: For decades while working full time, plus was an educator and raising a family, Debbie painted primarily in her head. As she traveled, she collected all kinds of ideas for the paintings she would do one day. Once she became the head of a school in Washington, DC, over 17 years ago, she realized she needed to paint to counterbalance the demands of her very engaging job so she took her first steps into her new career as an artist. Since retiring from education, she has devoted her time to her artwork. The last several years, she has focused on mixed media work with paper and acrylic on stretched canvas. Her mosaic-like style comes from a love of Gaudi’s work in Barcelona and Fuster’s work in Havana, both of which she encountered in her travels. Her passion for celebrating diversity and promoting equity and inclusion is often reflected in her work. She does abstract work as well as work with iconic symbols such as the heart, the cross and the hand. Sometimes she creates fun, light-hearted pieces to help bring more joy into the world. She finds at this point in her life she is deeply appreciative of the wisdom, peace, and perspective that comes with time and experience and tries to share this with others through her art.
