Jolly Jar by Sumi
acrylic on claybord
10 x 10 inches
Statement: Growing up in a small town in India, I had a very humble childhood. Making toys out of clay, rocks, leaves were the delight of everyday. Buying Local candies with my saved pocket money at the tiny shop near my home was the highlight of the week.
I used to look forward to summer holidays when my aunt visited us from New York. Those were the days when she would bring this shiny bag full of delicious Jelly beans. I would save them in this glass jar and ration it such that I get to savor the flavor until the next batch arrives.
This painting of mine is a reminder of that time when toys were not as important as the sight of that colorful jar of Joy
Bio: Traveling the world, finding beauty in details and expressing it through various mediums are some of my favorite things to do and that has been a huge highlight of my career. Growing up in an Indian family rich in art, combined with my academic background of architecture has helped me create my own style of art. I started with drawing portraits for friends as commission, slowly moving on to creating my own collection and presenting it in shows nationally and internationally.
In fact, having lived in so many parts of the world and moving further away from my hometown has brought me closer to my roots. Every piece of my work has a reflection of my childhood or a moment that would take me back to reminiscing the tiny details of the time that made me smile and gave me pleasure that cannot be compared with anything else in this world. My works are like a story book reminding me how simple this life can be if we choose to let it. My pieces have made me realize the importance of home and who I am; the art I create keeps me grounded and my identity is the reason I make my art. Art has influenced and changed the way I live, but art is also the reason I can never forget who I truly am.
