I Was Reminded by Patricia Dahlman
thread on canvas
16 x 12 inches
Year created: 2018
Description: A black and white thread portrait of Martin Luther King Jr. on canvas overlaid with his quote in black and red lettering “I should have been reminded that disappointment produces despair and despair produces bitterness, and that the one thing certain about bitterness is its blindness."
Connection to the theme: Martin Luther King was a great believer in the Beloved Community. Quotes by him help us understand and lead a kinder, caring nonviolent life.
Artist Statement: For a number of years, I have focused on making sculptures and two-dimensional works by cutting out forms on canvas and then sewing and stuffing the forms together. I cover these forms by drawing on them with thread or by covering them with fabric. The stitching on the forms is usually based on photographs that I take or from photographs from news magazines or off the internet. The sewn forms that are covered with fabric are simplified and more minimal and contrast different colors and shapes. The work varies in size from small individual pieces to installation. Most of the work is political and is influenced by recent political events around the world.
