Connection to the theme: Set in a harsh background of current global and national issues, the multiracial hands reaching toward the purple hearts offer a path to a better reality. Purple hearts symbolize giving above and beyond: perseverance despite the risks. Together we can prevail.
Artist Statement: I am a mixed media artist who works in 2-D and 3-D. I create abstract paintings, mosaics, and collages with acrylics and paper. I often explore equity, justice, and inclusion in my work using iconic images such as hands, hearts, and peace symbols. I love to create mixed-media art journal spreads. I also create three-dimensional figures, masks, and other assemblage with sticks, papers, plaster, clay, and fabric.
Bio: Debbie is a lifelong educator with over forty years of experience in Elementary and Middle School education both as a teacher and an administrator. She is an experienced adult educator as well having offered countless workshops in education, particularly in integrated curriculum, and more recently in art. Now, having retired from full-time work as an educator, Debbie, from her home in Lawrence Township, NJ, puts most of her time into her mixed media artwork. Over the last five years, Debbie has exhibited in galleries and other exhibition venues in Washington, DC, Colorado, Texas, and New Jersey as well as in numerous online exhibitions.
