Bhuvana by Jamie Greenfield
alkyd oils on canvas
24 x 36 inches
Year created: 2023
Description: A woman wearing a vibrant blue sari bordered in red with intricate gold patterns is seated with her hands gracefully resting on her lap smiling at the viewer.
Connection to theme: Bhuvana is a South Asian woman dressed for a family wedding, proud of her heritage and eager to share the joy with which she has chosen her outfit and accessories for this special occasion.
Artist Statement: These paintings reflect my current interest in portraiture, having people I know sit for me and in doing so, reveal something of their inner selves. They choose their own pose, clothing, and setting, revealing how they want to be seen by others, or even how they see themselves. This is a somewhat intimate relationship between painter and subject, at once both historically relevant and completely contemporary.
