Description
An Observer by Margaret Kalvar-Bushnell
oil on canvas
12 x 12 inches
Year created: 2022
Description: A man wearing a formal shirt and black tie stares contemplatively to his left. His features are painted in warm, earthy tones against a minimal background.
Connection to the theme: The gaze of the African-American gentleman who modeled for this work seemed to see everything in the environment and beyond.
Artist Statement: My focus is on color and composition as expressive elements of a painting. In still lifes, landscapes, or portraits of animals or people, I attempt to capture the essence of the image, not a photo-realistic rendition, while avoiding complete abstraction.
