Looking for a Way In by Eleni Litt
acrylic, inks, and collage on wrapped canvas
8 x 10 inches
Year created: 2022
Description: Subtle layered shades of green with blue hues in the top left and bottom center of the canvas with soft yellow and green geometric shapes, dabs, and lines emerging through the work.
Connection to theme: Many of us struggle with how to “show up” in certain spaces, especially those that typically don’t include people who look like us or come from where we come from. Showing up not only requires thought and emotional labor, it also requires finding our way in, if only we can find the “door.”
Artist Statement: I have several different approaches to art making and, therefore, discrete bodies of work emerging from these approaches.
While I often start from a close and deliberate observation of people, the natural world, and/or the built environment, I also work from intuition, imagination, and memory.
I also explore the mark-making process itself, noticing how lines, shapes, and colors behave in what could be described as a “dance” with the human body - the very gestures of the artist making these marks.
Sometimes what emerges is what could be described as a “translation” of thoughts and feelings into line, shape, and color -- marks that embody a visual expression of these emotions and thoughts.
An essential part of my creative practice is teaching as I continue to learn how to create and hold space for students to develop confidence in themselves as artists as they explore and notice the entry points into creativity that raise their energy and bring them joy.
