Connection to the theme: As we age, we grow in our spirit as our body diminishes, but we deserve the same kind of care and attention we received when we were younger.

Artist Statement: My work is centered around family, my ancestors, and the African American experience, whose guidance and protection surround me at all times. I know the power of art and seek to use it to uplift, heal, and change people’s minds and hearts into action. When I honored the artist in me, I realized my calling.

My use of fabric particularly, African fabric is a direct nod to my culture, my mother, and my neighborhood of aunties. Each instilled a strong sense of community and belonging in me through various activities, such as crocheting and sewing. I credit these experiences with significantly influencing my work. Leading to a deep appreciation for textiles and the stories they can tell.
