The Embrace by Francine Roche Kay
acrylic paint
18 x 32 inches
Year created: 2024
Description: A white line drawing of the top of a woman’s head on a black background with a variety of colors and designs assembled above the woman’s head.
Connection to theme: This painting shows two separate segments that are joined together by a thin, gold line. This represents the tenuous connections that we all face, whether it is in race, religion, beliefs, or social strata. In the end, we exist because we embrace our connections.
Artist Statement: My background in chemistry gives me insight into fluid dynamics, along with other concepts such as the roles density and surface tension play in fluids such as paint. Approaching scientific concepts through a different lens--as an artist, as opposed to a scientist--has broadened my understanding of fluids in a completely novel way. Needless to say, this has been an eye-opening journey and I look forward to delving further into this exciting art form.
Bio: I’ve loved art all my life, but have only recently decided to pursue art after decades in the sciences. To me, art is therapeutic. Drawing and painting are what I turned to when stressed or when I needed to work on a problem without actively thinking about it. I’ve always felt my creative side worked hand-in-hand with my analytical side, and I discovered this to be especially true as a fluid artist.
