Description: A painting of a woman of color with braids with a background of watery colors of blue, red, and yellow. Pencil drawings of other women -- one on each side -- share the watery space.
Connection to the theme: The mixed media art was born from my visceral response to the palpable chorus of racial intolerance and injustice in lieu of embracing love and equality for all. Through the act of creation and subsequent sharing of my art, the quiet voice from within found refuge in shouting a message that we must all take action to put aside individual needs for the greater good of all people.
Artist Statement: Art acts as both a container and catharsis for my emotions that drew me to the subject in the first place. While I primarily use oil paints to represent the people and places that I hold dear, my most cathartic moments that seem to require more immediate expression unfold in a more raw and organic way. These more evocative art pieces that come from a deep place seem to be more response art that calls for a variety of media.
Bio: Sheri Roseman, a South Jersey Artist, continues to be as passionate about creating art as she was as a young child! Her lifelong art-making and Art Therapy career are rooted in her belief that creating art is as vital a life force as breathing. Art is both a vessel and outlet for self-expression that serves as a platform to build community.
Throughout her life, Sheri has maintained that she will always be a student of art. To this end, she has taken countless classes at Fleisher Art Memorial and many workshops led by talented instructors such as Frances Galante, Stanley Bielen, Martin Campos and Dave Krevolin who continue to influence her.
While Sheri has shown in galleries in New Jersey and Maryland, participated in solo and dyad shows, as well as many juried shows both local and nationally, she is most proud to have been selected for the 2024 Manifesting Beloved Community Art Show. She has received awards from James Toogood, Dr. Susan Isaacs, and the Fleisher Annual Student Art Show.
