Peaceful Moonlit Night by Brittany Cole
acrylic on stretched cotton canvas
15 x 15 inches
Artist Statement: I had some fairly difficult experiences in my childhood and I would frequently turn to fantasy stories as an escape. When I wasn’t reading something like the Lady Knight series by Tamora Pierce or Lord of the Rings by J. R. R. Tolkien, I was daydreaming about being a knight, a witch or a dragon. In my imagination, I was anything that was bigger or stronger so I could protect myself and those around me. Luckily, my life is calm and safe now but fantasy stories and fantasy art are still a passion of mine. With enough life experience and a bit of faith in myself and my abilities, I have become a strong person that ACTUALLY CAN defend both myself and others. My art shows me as I see myself now, grown up, tough and happy, with no need of protection. This piece is a portrait of myself. I am strong and powerful. I posed for reference photos and then used my silhouette as the outline for my witch.
Bio: I am a self taught painter that works predominantly in acrylic. I tend to make brightly colored, highly saturated pieces with a fantasy theme. My work has been displayed in the Flemington DIY Gallery and the West Windsor Arts Council Gallery.
