Circles of Light by Debbie Gibbs
mixed media: acrylic paint and paper on stretched canvas
24 x 24 inches
Artist Statement: My work as an artist is often my response to current happenings. I have always been a person who tries to be forward thinking in a positive way. For most of my life I have done this as an educator, now as an artist. In tough times, I try to provide a vision of hope in the darkness. In this case the 36 circles on a 24" by 24" canvas are evenly distributed. Inside the circles, I gradually added, over multiple days, colors, marks and papers, always adding the same things to each circle but with different placement, intensity and/or size. Each circle, created with order and purpose, grew more unique over time. There was lots of freedom in creating, but within a reassuring structure. That is what democracy is supposed to be. I felt the need to shine light on the strengths of our democracy as enshrined in our constitution which needs to hold firm in these challenging, destabilizing times.
