Life’s Subtleties by Carol Hoffman

collage and watercolor

12 x 19 inches

Artist Statement: After creating my non-representational watercolor/collage, I came up with the title, “Life‘s Subtleties,” encouraging viewers to imagine “My Visual Story,” and perhaps to think about the subtleties of their own lives. I had nothing specific in mind. In retrospect, the small rectangular collaged shapes might represent frames in the film of my life.

Bio: I started drawing recognizable objects at age 2, exhibited my first painting at 5, had my first solo exhibit at 11 in my local Baltimore library.

After taking an extra course in metal-shop in high school, at 16, I started my own business selling enameled copper items. I always enjoyed making functional items and selling them.
I received both my BFA from RIT majoring in metal and textiles, and my MFA, in Art Education along with ceramics and printmaking.
After teaching elementary art, I became an entrepreneur, owning two shops, selling the contemporary work of American craftspeople working with wood. At the same time, I owned an art gallery, selling 2 and 3 dimensional art and also crafts.

I now volunteer with senior art outreach programs, am a member of several artist groups through which I show my art.

Art and design has always been the focus of my life.
