While I Play by William Plank
acrylic
19 x 23 inches
Artist Statement: For the past few years, I’ve been commissioned to paint a number of guitars. At times, there were just as many unfinished guitar bodies as there were unfinished canvases. Although this new venture initially proved challenging, it became a lot of fun. People would always ask, “Do you play?” I would reluctantly reply, “No, I just paint them.”
While I don’t play guitar, I take satisfaction in thinking that maybe my artwork has inspired others to play with renewed spirit. My paint brush is their guitar pick, as the guitar becomes my canvas. I can “play” through the music of others. “While I Play” was a return to painting on canvas and was inspired by this time of quiet introspection.
