“I wanted to show another aspect of myself. The outer colors, the spring-like palette, is representational of my outer self. Those happier colors show my cheerful, bubbly, joyful self that I tend to show openly and frequently - especially in public and to others. The darker part, in-between the zipper, is the darkness within me. The darkness is my struggle. The darkness is my anger, my hate, my guilt, my suffering...it is what I try to hide. This piece is truly exposing a bit of my inner self that I try so very hard to hide.”

Artist’s Connection to Theme: This piece helps me to not be so scared to show all of me. All of me, including the dark parts of me, which includes my mental illness and the horrible things that come with it. Creating this was a part of creating more well being for myself as a form of deep expression.

Image Description: Majority of the painting is covered in light, spring colors. Palette of light purple, spring green, bright yellow and calming blue. Off center, but down the entire canvas, there is a black open zipper. Within the open zipper, a dark stream of black and red takes over the triangle area.

Jayme Fahrer feels as if she has always been an artist, yet now has finally found her true voice and connection. She has been a professional artist for less than a decade, showing locally within West Windsor, Princeton, Bridgewater, Lawrenceville, and Trenton. She is an abstract painter, using mostly leftover and "oops" house paints to create paintings that speak for her. Each piece communicates as an expression of herself, her emotions, and her struggles with mental illness and chronic physical illness. Jayme uses color, movement, flow, contrast, and the creative making process to translate her desired expression onto canvas. She hopes that her openness about her mental and physical illness will help those who suffer alone and in silence, to feel that they are not alone, and they do not need to stay silent.

Frame: Gallery wrapped 1.5" canvas with finished edges. The zipper goes around the side and the end hides behind the back.
