Artist’s Statement: My love of geometry and movement drew me to the pin-wheel/diagonal aspect of this traditional quilt pattern. When the bright colors were added, a beach, teaming with colorful bodies, towels and umbrellas became the inspiration for this piece. The quilting and embroidery added the textures of sand, water, and wood boardwalk.
Artist’s Bio: Very little in Carol’s working life, which was primarily in elementary teaching and then business administration, gave any indication that she would end up as a textile artist. But there were some clues. She loved to work with her hands. She had lots of experience using a sewing machine and hand stitching. She chose to take art and architecture classes whenever she could. She had stints as an architectural model builder and an architectural draftsperson. About 1995, it all came together when she started making small quilts for the joy of manipulating the designs. This was not the three-dimensional, geometric world of architecture, but even in two dimensions, there was plenty of opportunity to explore line, shape and spatial relationships as well as color and texture. It has become the most satisfying work of her life. Carol and her husband are long time Princeton residents.
