Artisan Statement: The Shibori tradition is a manual hand-dyeing process using Indigo dyes on 100% natural fabrics. There are centuries-old techniques, but each dyer applies these processes uniquely. Fluctuations in temperature, dye intensity, and variations in materials also create subtle variations. This means each piece is slightly different and one-of-a-kind!
Artisan Bio: Sue Fox Mitrano creates Shibori textiles and nature-inspired prints. Her longtime love of printmaking met a new passion for Shibori dyeing in the summer of 2021. Both involve the transfer of designs to a surface, but the processes are quite different. With Shibori, Sue creates silk, cotton and wool blend scarves in traditional patterns as well as original designs. Varying the fabric prep as well as the dyeing process allows her to create variations in both hue and intensity. Her printmaking is inspired by her love of nature and gardening. She depicts flowers she finds while hiking trails or touring gardens, as well as when working in her own perennial gardens. A native of West Windsor, Sue is also a certified K-12 Art Teacher. She has a BFA from Syracuse University in graphic design with a minor in photography. After a 15-year career as a designer and art director, Ms. Mitrano earned her BA in Art Education at The College of NJ. She has taught in schools in NJ and PA as well as at West Windsor Arts!
