Opening the Doors of Power by Joann Donatiello
Dimensions: 8 x 8 inches
Artist Statement: This work was created in response to injustice on every level, from the deeply personal to the global. The open doors represent hope that with awareness, acceptance, and openness comes healing.
Artist Connection to the theme: When I contemplate a world designed around social and economic justice, I begin with structures, both visible and invisible, formal and informal, historical and contemporary, and symbolized by large, heavy doors that protect and enrich those on the inside while excluding those on the outside. And then I imagine that by exposing what is behind those doors and shedding light on the fundamental and foundational injustices of those structures we can begin the healing process and work toward a world where all people can walk through any door.
