For They Know Not by Saundra Johnson
Medium: acrylic on black gallery wrap canvas
Dimensions: 16 x 20 inches
Artist Statement: As the mother of a Black son and grandmother of a Black grandson, wife of a Black soldier, sister, daughter, I see my people being slaughtered with impunity yet rarely do I see our emotions being portrayed. This piece incorporates the feeling of anguish felt by a mother who is holding her lifeless son in her arms while also showing the viewer how unnerving it must feel to have a weapon pointed at you by a person in "authority."
Artist Connection to the theme: Police brutality is an issue that must be constantly brought to the forefront. When a young Black male is shot, he leaves behind not only the grief depicted in my artwork, but also the fear of a people who know that they can be shot with impunity.
Bio: I am an artist because I said so. I have been painting in oils since I was 12 years old and acrylics for the last 10 years. Although I paint landscapes and still life paintings, my passion is painting Americans that Rockwell forgot.
Frame: Gallery wrap canvas.
