Small Vessel #14 by Jane Fetter, It's Only Natural Felting
Wet-felted vessel, gray-green, with natural material embellishment
Material: wool fleece, dried natural materials
Dimensions or size: 4"d x 2"h
Artisan Statement: I have always been drawn to the outdoors and using dried natural materials in a variety of ways. One of my goals is to feature dried plants and pods in a way that others may notice them and their beauty in new ways. I love the process of wet felting with wool fleece, combining textures and colors and creating pieces that allow the natural materials to be enhanced.
Artisan Bio: Jane Fetter has worked in a variety of fiber arts for most of her life. She has a Master’s degree in Related Arts, primarily textile arts, from the University of Wisconsin, and focused on weaving early in her career. She had a 20+ year “hiatus” from her textile work to teach fifth grade when it came time for pay for college tuition for her three sons, though she had a floor loom in her classroom, and taught all of her students to weave.
Now retired from teaching, she is experimenting with other fiber arts such as baskets, surface design, and felting. She loves the organic nature of making felt and integrating color and texture into her pieces. She has always been drawn to nature, and looks for ways to incorporate natural materials such as seeds, pods, lichen, and vines into her work. Not only do these materials enhance the felted vessels, but they become elements which encourage the viewer to see them in a different way from their original state. She also volunteered regularly at HomeFront's Sewing Space before the pandemic, and continues being involved in that whole program as much as possible.
