SUMMARY:Thursday: Oil Painting for Beginners (Adult)
DESCRIPTION:Whether you are completely new to oil painting, returning to the medium from a long break, or looking for more guidance on how to continue your practice, this class is for you. All students will learn the fundamentals of oil painting including what supplies you really need, how to use those supplies, and the techniques that will make your art magical including underpainting, color mixing, and the use of value. \n\nWe will start by creating master copy studies to learn more about value in black and white or sepia tones. Then, we will create still life paintings to learn about underpaintings and their importance to the practice of oil painting. Third, we will discuss the color wheel and color schemes including monochromatic and dichromatic color schemes. Finally, students will have the opportunity to apply everything that they have learned to a painting in the subject matter of their choosing. \n\nBy the end of the class, all students will have created 4 paintings in total and leave with more knowledge and confidence as oil painters. \n\nSupplies Needed: \n1 canvas board, 9 x 12 inches \n2 canvases, 11 x 14 inches or 12 x 16 inches \n1 canvas, size of choice (medium: 11 x 14 and 12 x 16, large: 16 x 24, 18 x 24, or 24 x 30) \n1 container for paint and brushes, tacklebox or art box is recommended \n1 large tube of Titanium white (200 ml) \n1 tube of ivory black (37 ml) \n1 tube of burnt umber (37 ml) \n1 tube of raw umber (37 ml) \n1 tube of burnt sienna or raw sienna (37 ml) \n1 tube of alizarin crimson (37 ml) \n1 tube of cadmium red (37 ml)\n1 tube of cadmium yellow medium (37 ml) \n1 tube of ultramarine blue or Prussian blue (37 ml) \n1 tube of yellow ochre (37 ml) \n1 tube of pthalo green (37 ml) \n1 palette knife \n1 set of brushes (4-6 in different sizes, prefer round but any brushes work) \n1 empty glass jar or container that can be tightly closed \n1 pack of disposable palette paper or 1 glass palette \n1 container of Gamsol odorless mineral spirits (8 oz or 16 oz bottle) or Turpentine \nApron or old t-shirt \nRags or old t-shirts or old towels \n\nOptional: disposable masks, brush soap or dish soap, latex or other disposable gloves, paint scraper \nRecommended brands: Winsor and Newton Winton paints, Gamblin paints, Grumbacher paints \nStores: DickBlick.com, Michael’s, Jerry’s Artarama \nNote: Oil painting supplies are rather expensive but they will last you a long time if properly stored.
